There are many products in shops to clean the copper and make it shine again. Whether it is pots, dishes, antique molds, etc., the method always remains the same.
Copper items are always "solid" with just a thin layer of tin inside for pots and pans, so no risk of rubbing too much as can be the case with silver plated metal that would eventually lose its thin layer of silver. On the other hand, it is not a question of scratching it either so always use a cloth or a non-abrasive sponge.
.
I have given you an overview and reveal the possible methods.
You will find at the end a photo comparison to judge for yourself the result.
1 - Special copper products as Twinkle
This is a paste to rub on your copper with a small sponge. This is clearly the most expensive option. You have to rub a lot and better to put gloves because the composition does not breathe the natural (and the smell either ...)
The copper regains its color but has a final appearance rather matte that disappointed me. On the other hand, the packaging specifies that copper will oxidize less quickly thanks to a protective layer left by the product (to be checked ...)
2 - The multi-use stone from Starwax
This is a more natural option and the advantage of this product is that it is not limited to revive the copper but to many other cleaning in the house on a daily basis (I would not list it here but it’s pretty great).
It is always a paste to rub with a damp sponge then rinse with clear water, but no smell this time.
The result is quite similar to the Twinkle paste with a slightly matte appearance.
3 - The stone of the druggist from Briochin
I will not beat around the bush, this is my favorite product. It is also a natural clay paste, like the Starwax one, but I find that the Briochin one is thinner and of better quality (I use it for so many things).
This is, in my opinion, the best result on copper, you get a shine and a perfect color. On the other hand, I admit, you have to rub a lot it is a little longer than with other products ... we have nothing without anything! But fortunately I found a little trick that I reveal below !
4 - The good old traditional method
And yes I keep the best for last ... the method we learn at the catering school is to rub the copper with vinegar and salt. It is as simple, natural and economical! And the must is that the efficiency is incredible, this is the method that asked me the least elbow grease.
Traditional methods are always the best, but unfortunately we tend to forget them and let ourselves be lulled by marketing that sells us industrial products that we finally do not need....
In short, soak your sponge with vinegar then pour salt on it and rub directly on the copper. The reaction is magical by cons the smell a little less ... finally rinse with water.
The rendering is not as brilliant as with the druggist’s stone.
5 - Conclusion
My final option, if you are demanding like me, is to start with salt and vinegar cleaning to gain efficiency, then finish to luster with the druggist stone for a perfect result.
Here is the comparison in photo, the last being the option salt and vinegar with polishing stone druggist. The difference is not obvious on the photos but I guarantee you that to the eye it is really noticeable.
