The boundary between the antique, the vintage and the second hand can often seem blurred, yet the explanation is very simple, we tell you everything ...
Today these 3 terms can be applied to any object (furniture, clothing, tableware, decorative objects, etc.).
They are often used wrongly because it is a tendency ... however, be careful not to be fooled by the abusive use of a "vintage" label stuck on a brand new item, which is seen more and more often (greenwashing).
The age determines the term to use :
ANTIQUE
We are talking about antique items for what dates back more than 100 years.
VINTAGE
Anything over 20 years old is considered vintage.
There is, however, a small subtlety between clothing and furniture.
For furniture and decorative objects, we consider rather vintage until the early 80s, while for clothes, so trendy today, we can go until the late 90s.
SECOND HAND
Then for a more recent object, which has already been used, we’ll just say second-hand.
When the term Retro, refers to a style of the 40, 50, 60’s. This does not mean that the item dates from that time, but simply that it is inspired by it.
